Care Tips for Your New Dentures

If you were just fitted with high-quality, affordable quality dentures, congratulations are in order. You have the best dentures available, and your smile is back for good. Now it’s time to make sure they give you years of great service by taking care of them properly. Although your dentures won’t be subject to decay like your natural teeth were, they are vulnerable to damage if you don’t maintain, wear, and store them properly. The following tips will get your denture care on the right track, and help protect your wise investment.

Denture-Cleaning Guidelines

Keep your dentures clean to keep them looking great.

  1. Clean your dentures daily without exception. Soak them in denture cleanser regularly to keep them white.
  2. When brushing your dentures, use a denture brush and gentle strokes to avoid damaging any plastic or metal components. Moisten the brush to help avoid surface scratches.
  3. Before you reinsert your dentures, use toothpaste and a toothbrush to clean gums, tongue, and any remaining natural teeth to remove plaque and stimulate blood flow to the tissues.
  4. After brushing thoroughly, rinse with mouthwash to freshen your breath.
  5. Although it may be tempting, never try to make adjustments to your dentures yourself. Doing so could harm your dentures or your mouth.

Denture Removal and Storage

Unless you have permanent dentures attached to implants, you can remove them for care and storage.

  • Before removal, swish warm water or mouthwash around in your mouth.
  • Fill your bathroom sink with water. If you accidentally drop your dentures into water, they are less likely to be damaged.
  • To remove the top denture, position your thumb against your front tooth surface, and gently press upward and outward. To remove the lower denture, pull forward slowly while making a rocking motion.
  • When you’re not wearing your dentures, keep them moist. Allowing your dentures to dry out can alter their shape; this can affect how they fit.
  • Store the dentures in a denture-soaking solution or cool water. Never put them in hot water; this causes warping.
  • If your dentures have metal attachments, follow your dentist’s specific instructions for care and cleaning. Metal parts may tarnish if stored in water.
  • Visit your dentist regularly for check-ups.
